Harbour development set to revitalise Ōpōtiki
The Ōpōtiki Harbour project is set to revitalise the economy of this Eastern Bay of Plenty district.
World demand for seafood is increasing rapidly and is estimated to grow into a billion-dollar industry. Ōpōtiki is poised to contribute to that growth.
Ōpōtiki has huge potential to contribute to the New Zealand economy. While the district has a small population (9,000) and economy ($180M GDP), it has a large geographical area, and a very extensive coastline.
The harbour development, which will ensure a minimum channel depth of about four metres, will create access to the Harbour for larger vessels, allowing Ōpōtiki to become a service and processing base for the aquaculture industry. Underpinning this project is a strong commitment from local community leaders, including iwi and Council, to focus on community economic development and generating jobs for local people.
Developing aquaculture within Ōpōtiki will create a platform for sustainable economic growth in the District by:
- Creating new jobs (2004 research estimated more than 900 full-time jobs).
- Adding more than $34 million a year to the District economy.
- Substantially increasing average household incomes.
